Things to Do

No matter the time of year and no matter your interests, you’ll find great things to do when you visit the Black Mountain area. Here are some suggestions for year-round activities, seasonal fun, and some events sponsored by The Red Rocker Inn. Are you looking for something to do in the beautiful town of Black Mountain? There’s always something going on.

Black Mountain Tailgate Market

This fun market is held on Saturday mornings from May through November in the back yard of First Baptist Church. It’s just a few blocks away from The Red Rocker Inn and the center of town. It’s an easy walk but there is also plenty of parking if you want to drive your car. You’ll find it is just the thing to fill a lazy weekend morning. Stroll the booths for treasures such as handmade jewelry, produce of all kinds, local organic meats, arts and crafts, eggs, live plants and more. If you don’t have a shopping bag, just ask us. We’d be happy to loan you one. This is small town community at its best!

Annual Sourwood Festival

In Black Mountain, the favorite event of the summer is the Annual Sourwood Festival which fills the downtown with wholesome entertainment for both adults and children in August each year. 2022 dates are Saturday, August 11 beginning at 9 am and ending Sunday, August 12 at 8 pm. But don’t miss the Sourwood Idol Contest on the 10th!

Over 30,000 people from all over the country flock to our little town to take in the festivities each summer. Music, dancing, arts & crafts, food, kid’s rides and games, Saturday night fireworks, and more in an alcohol-free environment make it the perfect event for everyone.

Browse among the 200 vendors and discover lots of local and unique arts and crafts as well as the delicious food! Sample the BBQ, funnel cakes, home made ice cream, local jelly, corn on the cob, sausages, and of course, the HONEY.

Yes, all this festivity is to celebrate the local Sourwood honey and the bees who make it. Come join the fun! But don’t fight the crowd for a parking spot. If you stay at The Red Rocker Inn, leave your car here; you’ll be just three blocks from the festival!

There are a lot of other hikes we like and can give you suggestions when you come.
